Port St. Lucie Police Marine Unit heads up Operation “Safe Passage” to remove Logs from the St. Lucie River

Post Date:11/14/2017 2:11 PM

Port St. Lucie – Boaters traveling the North Fork of the St. Lucie River should be advised that crews will be working to remove hazards navigations in the North Fork of the St. Lucie River on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Crews from the Port St Lucie Police Department Marine Unit, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Port St Lucie Public Works, Port St Lucie Parks and Recreation, and St Lucie County Parks and Recreation and Facilities will be conducting a joint operation to remove navigational hazards in the river.

Since Hurricane Irma, we have identified numerous hazards to navigation on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.  In response, the Port St. Lucie Police Department Marine Unit has worked with other agencies to organize a "River Cleanup".  Fallen trees that have previously been identified as hazards to safe navigation, as well as hazards identified during the operation will be towed to area boat ramps and stored until they can be removed with heavy equipment from Port St. Lucie Public Works later that afternoon.  The trees will be placed in dumpsters and then taken to the landfill where they will be mulched.  Fallen trees that are affixed to the shoreline will remain but be documented and monitored in the future to prevent them from becoming hazards to navigation.

The storage and removal sites will be the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens located at 2410 SE Westmoreland Boulevard and the River Park Marina located at 500 E Prima Vista Boulevard.  During the operation there will be no disruption to the boat ramps at River Park Marina; however, the kayak launch and seawall at the Botanical Gardens will be needed for debris removal and will have disruption of service.
