The Contractor Licensing Division is responsible for determining that contractors applying for building permits have either a state license or have been issued a Certificate of Competency by the City's Contractors' Examining and Licensing Board. The Contractor Licensing Division also verifies that contractors have obtained required insurance coverage.
Requirements for licensure are almost as varied as the types of licenses available. In all cases, an applicant must fill out the required application and be able to prove his/her experience. The amount of experience required ranges from one to four years.
All licenses require that the applicant be tested. The exam required is determined by the applicant's trade classification. All required exams for licensure are administered by Thomson Prometric. Requirements for licensure are specified in Chapter 489 of the Florida Statutes.
