John Caravelli

John Carvelli was born on Plattsburg N.Y. Air Force Base in 1961. He moved to Port St. Lucie in 1973 when the population was just 5,500 residents. His parents were business owners and helped to start one of the first little league teams at Sportsman Park. Mr. Carvelli’s parents also instilled community service at an early age through the Port St. Lucie Lions Club. In 1976, John and a small group of his high school students founded the Junior Lions (LEO) Club. The group would be seen all over Port St. Lucie collecting glasses and working Lions Club breakfast.

Mr. Carvelli graduated from John Carroll High School where he was active on sports teams, service clubs, and on the Yearbook staff. He later attended and graduated from Clemson University and the University of Florida; earning a Doctorate in Education from Clemson University in 1993. In college, he was President of the Industrial Education Association and a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Mr. Carvelli has extensive experience in the field of education. He has been a vocational teacher, school principal, apprenticeship coordinator, and central office administrator. From 1994-2010, he was elected to the St. Lucie School Board, serving three times as Chairman. In 1997, as Chairman, he led efforts and testified in Federal Court to lift the 27-year desegregation order. He helped to pass two construction bond referendums and was part of a team to get county wide accreditation for schools.
An active member of the community, Mr. Carvelli has been a United Way Trustee, Chamber of Commerce member, served on the initial Sunrise Theatre Board, and with his wife, co-founded the PGA/St. Lucie Schools Junior Golf program. In 2006, Mr. Carvelli was selected by John Carroll High School at its alumni of the Year for his service to the community.

Mr. Carvelli has resided in District 2 since 2003. He is married to Karol, an ESE Teacher/Specialist at Port St. Lucie K-8 school and has a daughter who is a high school student.
