In 1991, upon my retirement as administrative assistant to the president of the University of Texas, as well as to the superintendent of schools, my husband and I moved from Tyler, Texas to Port St. Lucie.
As a newcomer to Port St. Lucie, I dedicated myself to learning the city and to becoming familiar with the area. I began volunteering with the St. Lucie Chamber of Commerce. After two years, the Chamber moved to City Hall and I was heavily involved in setting up the office there and managing it. I worked with 20 wonderful Chamber volunteers, met new people and helped the public become familiar with the area and with what St. Lucie County had to offer.
Two years ago, the Chamber of Commerce moved out of City Hall in order to free up space for the city, and I became aware of the plans that the city had to construct the Port St. Lucie Civic Center. I watched as that plan became a reality, and, in 2008, I knew I wanted to be in on the “ground floor” of the Civic Center and assist them as they implemented their own volunteer program.
The staff at the Civic Center has been wonderful to me and to the other volunteers. It has been a pleasure to volunteer at the Civic Center, and I look forward to all of the great events that regularly take place there. Thank you all for this award!
