Port St. Lucie City Council member Shannon Martin will dance the foxtrot at the League of Women Voters’ 3rd Annual “Dancing with our Celebrity Stars” event at the Civic Center on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Representing Team Port St. Lucie, Martin will compete against other local officials and leaders to raise money for city’s Police Athletic League on Tiffany Avenue.
Modeled after a popular TV show, “Dancing with our Celebrity Stars” pairs locally known leaders with professionally trained dancers. Each couple trains for several weeks and then competes against other leader/dancer couples to raise money for charitable causes.
While Martin has little dance training or experience, her partner, Bill Cromer, has been dancing for 13 years and teaching it for eight. He practices regularly at the Rio Ballroom in Jensen Beach.
“Shannon has been a fantastic partner,” Cromer said. “We’ve got a good routine, some nice steps, and I think we can win first place.”
Scoring at the competition will be done by the audience. As each dance is completed, the dancers will move throughout the room and collect donations. Each dollar collected will equal one point, and the couple with the most points will be declared winners at the end of the evening.
Tickets to the event cost $50 each, or $80 per couple. The evening also includes a chicken dinner by Domenick’s Catering.
The Port St. Lucie Civic Center address is 9221 S.E. Civic Center Place. The event begins at 5 p.m.
