December is a month of celebrations and surprises, and Port St. Lucie residents will find a multitude of both at the grand opening celebrations of the city's new Civic Center. Located at 9221 S.E. Civic Center Place on the southeast corner of U.S. 1 and Walton Road, the Civic Center is the crown jewel of Port St. Lucie's new downtown development
The 100,000-square-foot facility is home to a recreational center, an Art Gallery and a banquet facility that includes two elegant ballrooms with more than 25,000 square feet of space, including a full-size kitchen. Catering for the facility is provided on-site by a leader in the hospitality industry.
Just outside of the banquet facility is a beautiful outdoor plaza highlighted by an interactive fountain. In addition to the events inside the stunning Civic Center, many community events will take place in Village Square, located in front of the center.
On Monday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m., the V.I.P. Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony will take place. Many local dignitaries will be on hand to take part in this historic event.
On Tuesday, Dec. 2, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Civic Center will be open for tours, demonstrations and more at the Community Meet n' Greet. On the same day, beginning at 10 a.m., the Port St. Lucie Green Market will open. This popular market will be a regular event every Tuesday through May, 2009
On Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., the 2,000-square-foot Art Gallery will be unveiled, highlighting the talents of local and regional artists.
On Thursday, Dec. 4, beginning at 6 p.m., the Civic Center will be brighter than ever when the Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place. Come see Santa arrive and usher in the holiday season, while listening to the Port St. Lucie Community Band perform favorite holiday tunes.
On Friday, Dec. 5, the doors will open at 6 p.m. for an elegant gala event appropriately titled "From Open Space to Endless Opportunities. The affair is open to the public and will honor those in the community who had the vision to make the Center a reality. Tickets are $100 per person and will include recognition in the Benefactor Program. Black-tie is optional.
On Saturday, Dec. 6, from noon to 9 p.m., the Festival of Lights will further celebrate the season's arrival. Arts and crafts vendors, carnival rides, live music and other entertainment will fill the day, culminating in an evening parade and fireworks.
On Sunday, Dec. 7, at 10 a.m., Santa's Workshop will open, allowing children to create their own arts and crafts for themselves or as gifts for loved ones. A children's afternoon performance will also take place. In the meantime, the first annual Men's 3-on-3 "Scrooge Shoot Out" tournament will hold its final playoff game beginning at 9 a.m., with the championship game starting at 1 p.m. inside the Civic Center.
