Planning a Garage Sale in Port St. Lucie?
Great idea. But if you plan to put garage sale signs out on the streets, you’ll need to get a special permit from the City of Port St. Lucie’s Business Tax office. Yes, there is a fee – it costs $5 – but for that price, the city will advertise your garage sale on its Web site, www.cityofpsl.com, in it’s weekly electronic newsletter called PSL Mail, and on PSL TV-20, which airs on Comcast and Hometown Cable Plus 24 hours a day.
The $5 fee allows one sign in your yard and as many as six signs in your neighborhood leading to your house. This new policy was started recently by the City Council in response to a growing litter problem caused by garage sale signs that were never removed from public areas after the sale event ended.
Under the new ordinance, permitted signs can be put up on the day of the sale starting at 5 a.m., and must be removed by 7 p.m. Signs can be placed along the shoulder of the road, but not in the median.
For the permit applications that are received by the city by 5 p.m. on the Tuesday before the sale date, the city will advertise the address of the sale on PSL TV-20’s scrolling bulletin board, which airs several times a day. The addresses will be posted also on the City’s Web site with a link from the home page saying “Garage sales this weekend.”
The new ordinance applies to any similar sales using other names such as lawn sale, yard sale, front yard sale, back yard sale, home sale, attic sale, rummage sale, patio sale, flea market sale or any similar designation.
Please keep in mind the City Council’s reason for creating the ordinance – to keep Port St. Lucie’s public areas free of the debris left behind from old yard sale signs and to protect our natural environment. Code Enforcement officers will remove non-permitted signs from public areas. If you hold a sale, please comply with the permit requirement and remember to remove all your signs after the sale.

Thank you for supporting this important new requirement.
