Residents may qualify for tax refund up to $4,824
Posted: January 23, 2009
Low income residents may be entitled to receive an Earned Income Tax Credit that could result in a tax refund of up to $4,824 for qualifying individuals and families.
The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable federal income tax credit for low-income families and individuals. If the EITC credit is greater than the amount of taxes owed, the result is a tax refund to those who qualify for and claim the credit.
Taxable earned income includes wages, salaries, tips, union strike benefits, long-term disability benefits received prior to minimum retirement age, net earnings from self-employment and combat pay.
In addition, those with total income of $42,000 or less are eligible for free tax preparations by trained volunteers, who can also assist with filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit and other special credits. Residents can also take advantage of free electronic filing of income tax forms, resulting in the receipt of tax refunds much more quickly.
This Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is available for those who qualify at the following Port St. Lucie locations on the dates and times indicated:
- Morningside Library Annex Building, 2410 S.E. Morningside Blvd., beginning Tuesday, Feb. 3. Volunteers will be available at this location Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon through tax season
