WATER/SEWER ASSESSMENT
PAYMENT PROGRAM
The water/sewer assessment payment program is designed to help homeowners pay the remaining balance of the assessment for their primary residence (shown as Water/Sewer Benefit on the property tax statement.)
1. How do I qualify for assistance?
A. Households must:
meet income guidelines (see #2)
meet asset guidelines (see #3)
occupy the home as full-time, primary residents (no rental property)
B. Property must be:
located in Port St. Lucie City Limits
improved with a home (vacant property is not eligible)
2. What are the income limits?
Households must be classified as very-low or low income to be eligible for the program. Income is defined as wages, income from assets, and certain other resources or benefits as determined by Florida Housing Finance Corporation. A list of the current income limits (adjusted for family size) is listed below item #7.
3. Is there a limit on assets that I may have?
Combined total assets of all household members cannot exceed $60,000. This does not include your home or necessary personal belongings.
4. Do I pay back the money I receive?
The assistance is in the form of a grant; there will be no lien placed on your property and you will not be required to pay back the money.
5. Will my home be hooked up to water/sewer?
This grant pays for the water/sewer pipes to be installed in your street. You do not have to hook up to water or sewer unless your system fails. If you should need to hook up to water and/or sewer, you may qualify for assistance under our repair/rehab program. There may be a waiting list for this program, so call our office for more information.
6. How do I apply for assistance?
Community Services will only accept applications when funding is available. When funds are limited, we may establish a waiting list. Please call the office at (772) 344-4084, for information on funding availability and specifics on the application process - hearing impaired call TDD (772) 873-6309.
7. When will I know if I have been selected?
We are required to send verifications to third parties to confirm all sources of income and assets. This process usually takes a few weeks. If you are qualified, your file will be grouped with others ready for funding. You will receive a letter letting you know that we have paid your assessment or that you do not qualify. If your mortgage lender escrows funds for payment of taxes and insurance, it is your responsibility to let them know that your assessment is being paid by the City of Port St. Lucie.
8. Can I apply for Water/Sewer Assessment Payment Assistance more than once?
Water/Sewer Assessment Payment Assistance will be approved only for one property per household.
