Mayor Christensen’s State-of-the-City address highlights progress, calls for citizen action

Mayor Patricia P. Christensen gave her first State-of-the-City address Friday, highlighting some of the city’s successes in 2007, and asking citizen’s to be involved in the important issues of the day.

She talked about improvements in communications with residents and other governmental agencies, and about progress on many road, utility and park projects. The Mayor said the city is on the right course in its recruitment of major biotech research firms, and she pointed out the city’s new low tax rate, saying recent cuts were a response to the “voices of the people.”

MayorMayor Christensen also asked residents to contact state and federal officials and urge them to help get the Crosstown Parkway bridge over the St. Lucie River built sooner, rather than later, so that residents on the east side will not become isolated from life in the rest of the city.

“I am very concerned about the amount of time it is taking for the state and federal governments to decide where and when we will complete this important road as you, the residents, have asked us to do,” she said. “Anyone who knows and cares about our city understands that the critical link for the Crosstown Parkway is its third crossing over the St. Lucie River.”

Another area of concern for Mayor Christensen is the safety of school kids walking to bus stops in the morning. She urged drivers to use extra caution on the roads, and she urged parents to educate their children about traffic safety.

“A few seconds are not worth the life or heath of anyone, especially a child,” she said. “If you do not slow down, you will be caught, and you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Mayor Christensen was elected to the position in November of 2006 after serving several years as Vice Mayor and Councilwoman from District 1. You can find out more about her by clicking here. For the full text of her 2007 State-of-the-City speech, click here.
