Fire Department urges parents to beware of toy lighters

Posted: July 16, 2009

St. Lucie County—St. Lucie County Fire District Chief Ron Parrish is urging parents to be aware of cigarette lighters that look like toys.

"We’ve been made aware that these lighters, which can easily be mistaken as toys, are beginning to appear around the country," said Parrish. "Many of these are available online for less than $5."

These small cigarette lighters look like fun toys for children, but they are extremely dangerous to play with, says St. Lucie County Fire Chief Ron Parrish. He urges parents to take any lighters like these away from their kids.

The lighters can look like fish, such as the popular Disney character Nemo, animals, handy tools, or miniature fire extinguishers. Typically they have no child restraint on them.

"These lighters need to be treated as potentially dangerous items for any child. Parents need to be careful if they purchase such lighters and keep them away from children," Parrish said. "These are not toys, and should not be treated as toys."
