PSL once again has low crime ranking

Posted: December 4, 2008

The 2007 statistics are out, and once again, Port St. Lucie is shown to have a very low crime rate. Only Coral Springs and Pembroke Pines had a lower crime ranking. Nationally, Port St. Lucie ranked in the top 20 percent of cities with the lowest crime rates.

The crime rankings were released last month by CQ Press, a leading independent publisher of information on national politics, government and world affairs. Cities and metropolitan areas having a population of at least 75,000 were ranked using the same categories reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2007, including murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

Of the 385 cities ranked, Ramapo, N.Y. had the lowest crime rate in the nation, while New Orleans had the highest.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Port St. Lucie’s population in 2007 totaled 151,391. In comparison, Coral Springs’ population was 126,875 and Pembroke Pines, 146,828.
