Weekly Road Project Update, Dec. 28

Bayshore Boulevard (new information)

Both southbound lanes on Bayshore Boulevard have been re-opened between Eyerly and Grove avenues.  The lanes were closed Wednesday because of a water main break on the west side of the street in the 1300 block (near Twigg Avenue).  Though the road is open again, drivers can expect intermittent delays and closures to the southbound lanes again beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 2 as crews return to the area to make permanent repairs to the road.  For more information, call the Utility Systems Department at 873-6400.

Darwin Boulevard  (new information)

Darwin Boulevard is now open from Tamworth Street to S.W. Belmont Circle, so access to Windmill Point Elementary and Whispering Pines Park is fully open again.

The section of Darwin from Belmont to Landale Boulevard remains closed to all traffic, so traffic heading to Treasure Coast High School must approach from the southwest, on Darwin coming from Tulip Boulevard.  When school re-opens on Wednesday, Jan. 2, teachers and visitors will enter the campus from the Darwin entrance in front of the school, still coming only from Tulip.  This section of Darwin will remain closed to all other traffic.  The student parking lot will be open as usual, with entrance from the driveway off Tulip at Hale Street.  All buses will enter the campus from Landale, which will be closed to all other traffic.

The work is being done to add a sidewalk, to improve drainage and to improve turning in the intersections.  It will be going on until the middle of January, so drivers should consider an alternate route if possible.  For more information, call the Public Works Department at 871-5100.

Prima Vista  (new information)

All lanes on Prima Vista are open again as St. Lucie County crews are redesigning Prima Vista Boulevard from U.S. Highway 1 to Rio Mar Drive near the St. Lucie River bridge.  The work will result in improved drainage and turning.  County traffic engineers can be reached at (772) 462-1707.

St. Lucie West Boulevard  (new information)

Work is being done on St. Lucie West Boulevard in front of the Home Depot, between the Florida Turnpike and Cashmere Boulevard, to lengthen the turning lanes onto Cashmere in preparation for a Lowe’s home center that is under construction on the north side between Cashmere and the Turnpike.  Lowe’s is paying for the improvements, and delays at this time are at a minimum.  Work will be complete by Feb. 1.

Rosser Boulevard

The four lane section of Rosser Blvd between Gatlin Boulevard and Aledo Lane is now open. This section of road narrows to two lanes at Aledo, and construction continues south to expand the roadway to four lanes between Aledo and the Rosser Boulevard police sub-station. The traffic pattern will be change a few more times over the next six months, so drivers are asked to stay alert in the area.

Janette Avenue / Juliet Avenue

Janette Avenue is now open from California Boulevard to Cashmere Boulevard, one block south of the Crosstown Parkway construction area.  The road was redesigned to allow east/west traffic flow through the neighborhood.  Traffic used to make the east/west trip on Juliet Avenue, which has now been closed for construction of the Parkway.

Westmoreland Boulevard

Westmoreland Boulevard is now open and sidewalks have been added to both sides of the street from Port St. Lucie Boulevard to Cambridge Drive.

Entrance to and exit from the Bridge Plaza at Port St. Lucie Boulevard can be made from Westmoreland heading south toward Morningside Boulevard.  In addition to new sidewalks, which now stretch from Morningside to Port St. Lucie Boulevard, the improved road now has a landscaped median, better street lighting and an additional turning lane to go west on Port St. Lucie Boulevard.

Paid for partially by developers, the project finished two months ahead of schedule.

Crosstown Parkway

The Crosstown Parkway Bridge over the Florida Turnpike is open to traffic in both directions. There still is work going on at Bayshore Boulevard and at Cashmere, so traffic coming off the bridge will have to turn left or right.  The Crosstown Parkway’s connection to Cameo is now fully open.  Work also is well under way on the segment from Bayshore to Manth Lane and on the segment from Cashmere to I-95, and work has begun on the Crosstown interchange at I-95.

Becker Road / I-95 interchange

Construction of a new interchange at I-95 and Becker Road has begun.  Becker Road is now closed west of Hallmark Street, and Rosser Blvd is closed south of Edinburgh Drive.  When complete in late 2009, the interchange will shorten travel times to the south and open the southwest portion of the city to commercial development.  Construction to widen Becker to four lanes from I-95 to the Florida Turnpike will begin in the spring.
