SFWMD Plans Public Meeting for St. Lucie River
The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28 to discuss a proposed watershed protection plan for the St. Lucie River. The public is invited to attend and make comments.
Underscoring the state’s commitment to ecosystem restoration, the Florida Legislature in 2007 strengthened protection for the Northern Everglades by expanding efforts to protect and restore the St. Lucie watershed, including the estuaries. As part of this initiative, two new river watershed protection programs were created.
The draft River Watershed Protection Plan was released for public comment on Oct. 1. The draft plan was produced by a multi-agency team comprised of the South Florida Water Management District, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, in cooperation with Martin county and affected municipalities.
The participating agencies are seeking public input on the draft plan prior to submittal of the plans to the Legislature in January 2009. The plan is now available online at https://my.sfwmd.gov/northerneverglades. The public comment period will conclude on October 31.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SFWMD Martin/St. Lucie Service Center at 780 S.E. Indian Street in Stuart.
