City Engineer Walter Booker England III dies

Walter Booker England III, 68, of Stuart, Fla. passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, June 14 at Treasure Coast Hospice in Stuart.

Born in Huntsville, Ala., he was the only child of Dr. W.B. England II and Mary B. England. Walter graduated from Huntsville High School in 1958 where he was voted “most original.” In 1964, Walter graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Walter was an avid sailor and belonged to the Harbor Island Yacht Club on Old Hickory Lake in Nashville.

He was the Building Official for the City of Nashville and then moved to Stuart as the Assistant Director of Public Works for Martin County for a year before becoming the City Engineer for the City of Port St. Lucie where he served for 23 years. As City Engineer, he was instrumental in the execution of the water and sewer program throughout the entire City and has led the charge on the construction of the City’s Crosstown Parkway. Walter was on the founding committee of the Treasure Coast Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society, and was President in 1988.

Walter was of the Protestant faith and an accomplished organist and musician. Walter is survived by his wife of 24 years, Kay England of Stuart; sons: Barry Koehler and wife Ginger of Port St. Lucie and Brent Koehler and wife Beverly of Stuart; three grandchildren: Zach, Jake, and Luke. He will also be missed by his canine companion, Reggie. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 18 at Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart. A service will be at 11 a.m. on June 19 at the funeral home, with the Reverend Jim Brocious officiating. Burial will follow at Fernhill Memorial Gardens in Stuart.
