The City of Port St. Lucie has earned the Arbor Day Foundation’s award as a Tree City USA community for the city’s commitment to urban forestry. It is the seventh year Port St Lucie has earned the national recognition, announced April 17.
The city also received a Tree City USA Growth Award for demonstrating progress in its community forestry program. The prestigious Growth Award honors environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care in Tree City USA communities.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
The Foundation said the city’s strong commitment to planting and caring for trees, and the efforts of elected officials, volunteers and citizens helped Port St. Lucie earn the recognition.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit, environmental and educational organization of more than a million members with a mission to inspire people to plant and nurture trees.
