Annual Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Clean-up Day set for April 12

The Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Committee’s annual public participation Clean-up Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at the City’s Public Works compound on the southwest corner of Bayshore Boulevard and Thornhill Drive.

The event has become a tradition in Port St. Lucie, attracting several hundred people every year who want to make a proactive effort to reduce litter in public areas and improve the natural environment of the city.

The event will begin with volunteer registration at 8 a.m.  Buses will then take volunteers to various public areas for clean-up, returning them to the Public Works compound later in the morning.

Some of the volunteers will be asked to help plant 30 Oak trees that were donated by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. specifically for the event.  The trees will be planted near Dreyfuss Lake off the intersection of Rosser and Dreyfuss boulevards.  Volunteers are asked to register at the Public Works compound first, then ride the volunteer bus to the planting site, rather than drive to the area individually.

Events at the Public Works compound will include an autograph session with St. Lucie Mets baseball players and their mascot, Slider the Dog, games, music and a drawing. Participants will have a chance to win tickets to Disney World, or a Playstation3 or Nintendo Wii as a grand prize.  All who attend will receive tickets to a St. Lucie Mets game, and City Council members will greet the public.

All volunteers will get a free breakfast and lunch, a T-shirt, and transportation to and from the clean-up sites.  For high school students, participation qualifies for state-required volunteer service hours.

For more information about the clean-up Day or the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Committee, call the City’s Public Works Department at (772) 871-5100.
