Adopt-A-Street
Program
Questions
& Answers
Q: When was the City of Port St. Lucie Adopt-A-Street program started and who manages it?
A: It was started in 1992 by the Public Works Director to assist in curtailing litter issues that followed growth. The Public Works Department manages the program with assistance of the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Committee thru its Coordinator.
Q: What progress has been done to date?
A: As of the first quarter of 2004 the Adopt-A-Street program has over 57 streets identified for adoption. This equates to approximately 58 miles of adopted streets throughout the community.
Q: What is required to qualify an adopted street?
A: It is recommended that one mile of street be considered for adoption. This helps to reduce the annual cost of manufacturing and maintaining the signs that are posted along the public way, in recognizing a groups contribution. It also minimizes the volume of signs out in the public way, which has a negative appeal when too many are installed. However, we also understand that some streets are less than one mile in length. We support the adoption of these public ways in the same manner as other streets.
Q: How do I find out what streets are available for adoption?
A: Public Works staff can assist you with the search and identification of an acceptable location for adoption. Call us at 772-871-5100 for assistance. You will also be able to view this information electronically in the near future, by visiting the Public Works Department and Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful websites.
Q: How often will I be required to clean the street that Im considering for adoption?
A: At minimum Adopt-A-Street litter campaigns must be conducted quarterly. At the start it may be advantageous to consider doing it every two months until youve accessed the need. We encourage litter campaigns a frequent as the group can provide.
Q: What do I do with the trash/litter picked up?
A: Once you have conducted your quarterly campaign, or sooner, we will coordinate with you the collection to the materials collected and dispose of it for you. This activity is coordinated when you notify us of your activity and have come to Public Works for the issuance of litter tongs, safety vests, and trash bags.
Q: It there is cost to participate in the Adopt-A-Street program?
A: All that is needed is your time and willingness to conduct quarterly litter campaigns. Public Works will provide you with the litter tongs, trash bags, safety vest, training, and the service of picking up and disposing of the collected waste.
Q: Where can I pick up an Adopt-A-Street application?
A: An application can be picked up at the Public Works Department located at 450 SW Thornhill Drive, off Bayshore Boulevard. We can also mail the application. Our phone number is 772-871-5100. Provide your mailing information to the receptionist and one will be forwarded. You can also download an Adopt-A-Street application electronically.
Q: If I don't want to adopt a street how can I help?
A: We encourage property owners to consider picking up trash/litter along the public way next and across from their own property if vacant. If this is something you would like to consider please call us at 772-871-5100 so that we can issue you safety requirements for conducting this activity. We would also like to recognize your neighborhood effort by registering you in our program.
