The 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Some 3 R Facts:

We generate nearly 230 million tons of garbage every year!!

In 2001, every American produced about 4.4 pounds of garbage per day.

Approximately 35.7% of waste material is paper and paper products.

Ten cents of every shopping dollar is used to pay for packaging.

Many families spend over $260 each year on paper towels and napkins.

Since 1977, 250 million pounds of plastic per year has been kept out of the waste stream simply by reducing the weight of 2-liter plastic soft drink bottles.

Computer monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead and can contain a variety of toxic materials such as chromium, cadmium, and mercury.

Dry-cell batteries include alkaline and carbon zinc (9-volt, D, C, AA, AAA), mercuric-oxide (button, some cylindrical and rectangular), silver-oxide and zinc-air (button), and lithium (9-volt, C, AA, coin, button, rechargeable). On average, each person in the United States discards eight dry-cell batteries per year.
What can you do??
REDUCE
- Create less waste by purchasing products with less packaging.
- Buy the largest size of those products that you use regularly.
- Avoid buying products you really do not need (like magazines you seldom read).
- Purchase durable and repairable products.
- Delete your name from mailing lists.
- Buy non-hazardous products.
- Buy only the amount you need.
- Use real cameras and an electric razor or hand razor instead of disposable products.

REUSE
- Buy products in reusable or refillable packaging.
- Maintain and repair products.
- Use cloth diapers.
- Switch to cloth napkins, sponges, and cloth towels (instead of paper towels).
- Reuse your plastic picnic ware instead of disposing of it.
- Reuse leftover material to make something new.
- Compost your organic wastes.
- Buy products made of and packaged in recycled materials.
