Renovations complete on north end of boardwalk

Posted: October 3, 2008

Renovations on the north end of the St. Lucie River boardwalk are complete, and the improvements now mean nature lovers have 2,453 feet of walking paths along the river and through wooded mangroves in Port St. Lucie.

The boardwalk stretches from Tom Hooper Park (behind the Walgreen’s store at Port St.  Lucie Boulevard and Veterans’ Memorial Parkway) to the boat ramps and pavilion at Veteran’s Park at Rivergate.

Crews replaced the old wooden six-foot wide boardwalk with recycled lumber to create a 10-foot wide deck in its place.  A solar light system and thermoplastic handrails have been added, along with 450 feet of access boardwalks through the woods leading to the river.

The work cost $607,000 and was completed under budget.  There will be a grand re-opening on October 10 at 9 a.m., followed by the annual Kids’ Fishing Tournament.
