Kids line renovated boardwalk for Fishing Tournament

Posted: October 17, 2008

The Annual City of Port St. Lucie Kids Fishing Tournament attracted 101 children and their parents this year, with kids casting their lines from the newly renovated boardwalk along the St. Lucie River.

Held by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, the event followed the grand re-opening of the boardwalk, which had been closed for several months while crews replaced the old wooden six-foot wide boardwalk with recycled lumber to create a 10-foot wide deck in its place.  A solar light system and plastic handrails were added, along with 450 feet of access boardwalks through the woods leading to the river.

The first two fish of the day were caught by Alyssa Wahi from the 10- to 14-year-old age group, and by Ryan Williams from the 5- to 9- group.  Samantha Stott, from the 5- to 9 age group caught the most fish overall.

Whether they caught anything or not, most of the kids appeared to have fun as they spent the day fishing instead of sitting in school.  The Port St. Lucie City Council and Parks and Recreation Department congratulate the winners and want to thank every child for their participation.
