Grinder System Information

QUESTIONS & FACTS ON
S.T.E.P. OR GRINDER SYSTEMS

1.       What is the Low Pressure system also known as S.T.E.P?

This system consists of an interceptor tank and a pump chamber unit that houses a small submersible pump.  The water from the tank is pumped automatically through a pressure line to the wastewater treatment plant for final treatment.

2.       What is the Grinder System?

This system consists of a tank and a pump.  The water from the tank is pumped automatically through a pressure line to the wastewater treatment plant for final treatment.

3.       Will I hear the pump run?

You probably won’t.  The pump is a quality pump that will run when you use approximately 60 to 80 gallons of water.

4.       Who maintains the system?

The Utility Systems Department is responsible for maintaining the system from the rear of the tank to the wastewater treatment plant.  House plumbing problems are not the responsibility of the Utility Systems Department.

5.       What happens if there is a power failure?

If the power is off, the system cannot operate.  However, there is a small reserve capacity in the pump chamber/tank.  During the time of the power failure, please conserve water usage.

6.       Is there anything I shouldn’t put down the drain?

YES!  In order to protect the system, which is a biological process and to help prevent your house lines from clogging, please do not throw the following down the drain:

A.       Plastic of any kind
B.       Feminine hygiene materials or applicators
C.      Cigarette butts
D.      Contraceptives
E.       Excessive greases
F.       Coffee grounds
G.      Inorganic materials that cannot be treated biologically
H.      Baby wipes
I.       Q-Tips

7.       RID-X or other chemicals to enhance the process will not harm the system.

8.       Repairs necessitated by abuse or deliberate misuse will be charged to the property owner or tenant.

9.       If I have a problem what can I do?

The Utility Systems Department has a 24-hour service to call:  873-6400.  The system is equipped with an alarm system that is generally located in the garage or on the outside of the house on the control panel box.  The warning light and an audible alarm should activate as soon as the water level rises above the normal level.

10.     If I hear or see an alarm?

When you hear an alarm, or your neighbor is not at home and you hear theirs, you can silence the audio portion of the alarm by pressing the red light button located at the front center of the control panel box.  You should then call 873-6400 for service.  The Utility Systems Department has a 24-hour service to answer your call.

You may also have a problem if you notice your toilets are sluggish when flushed and water drains slower than normal.  You should make every attempt to conserve water until your service call is answered.

For any problem or questions regarding the system, please call the Utility Systems Department at 873-6400.  Every effort will be made to provide you with prompt, courteous, and efficient service.
