KPSLB Recognized with the Outstanding Education Involvement Award and the PSL Police Department with the Outstanding Law Enforcement Agency Award
PORT ST. LUCIE – Keep Florida Beautiful, the state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, brought together several county and city affiliates from around the state at its annual conference held in Bonita Springs. Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful (KPSLB) was recognized for outstanding educational involvement and creating a sustaining partnership through the “Buddy Bench” project.
Keep Port St. Lucie kicked off the “Buddy Bench” project on America Recycles Day, November 15, 2018 with initially three schools involved but quickly grew to benefit eight schools in its first year following overwhelming support from the community. Residents were asked to collect plastic bottle caps and lids to be reused to create a “Buddy Bench.” The benches also serve to promote kindness in schools and educates students how our deeds impact others. Each school needed to collect 200 pounds of caps for their respective buddy bench. Students learned about source reduction, reuse of materials and recycling as they handled the collection and processing of plastic caps and lids.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department assists Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful throughout the year and is committed to keeping our city clean and litter free. For the last 15 years, there has been an officer involved on the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful committee. At the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event, more than 50 pounds of medication and 20 pounds of ammunition were collected. The police Marine Unit also assisted in a river cleanup where 75 logs were removed, as well as multiple tires,55-gallon drum and a plastic garbage can.
