City’s Job Shadowing Day will give students a career glimpse for 2019 Florida Government Week
PORT ST. LUCIE – Sixteen Port St. Lucie students will trade in their textbooks and classroom lectures for safety glasses, cameras, computer software and customer service skills as a part of the City’s Job Shadowing Day on October 25, 2019, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
As a part of 2019 Florida Government Week, the day will provide high school students with an opportunity to work with City employees, where they get a chance to witness a wide range of jobs and job skills, ask questions, pick up information and learn first-hand the responsibilities and rewards of being a government employee.
The City has partnered with St. Lucie Public Schools to provide students from Treasure Coast High School, Port St. Lucie High School and St. Lucie West Centennial High School the opportunity to work with experts in the fields of Parks and Recreation, Public Works, Human Resources, City Clerk, Civic Center, Facilities Maintenance, Human Resources, Building, Neighborhood Services, Utility Systems, Information Technology, Planning and Zoning, Communications, City Administration and Law Enforcement. The Job Shadow Day will support learning that takes place beyond the four walls of a classroom and provide students with the opportunity to see the connection between academics and the demands of the workforce.
“The City is pleased to partner with St. Lucie Public Schools for this unique opportunity for students to experience city business first-hand,” explained City Manager Russ Blackburn. “Students have a variety of experiences to learn, including guest speakers, worksite tours, and job shadowing. It can be hard to know exactly what you want to do for the rest of your life when you're only 16, or even when you're 21. This program provides an excellent opportunity for students to spend a few hours with a City employee and experience first-hand some of the job opportunities in local government.”The City of Port St. Lucie is joining cities throughout the state celebrating Florida City Government Week from October 21-27, 2019. Florida City Government Week, sponsored by the Florida League of Cities, is a week-long celebration that raises awareness about the importance of municipal government and its daily impact on residents.
