Getting Ready

  • Prepare to cover all windows and doors with shutters or other shielding materials
  • Bring in light-weight objects such as garbage cans, garden tools, toys, and lawn furniture
  • Check food and water supplies
  • Stock up on extra batteries for radios, flashlights, and lanterns
  • Check and refresh first-aid supplies
  • Check prescription medicines (ten-day to two-week supply)
  • Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in an easy to carry container such as a large, covered trash container; a camping back pack; or a duffle bag

Clothing/Bedding

  • Blankets/pillows, etc.
  • Clothing (one complete change per person)
  • Hat, gardening gloves, rain gear, sturdy shoes, long pants, long sleeve shirts, sunglasses, jacket or coat, underwear, socks
  • Sleeping bags
  • Water (minimum of one gallon daily per person for three days)

Food (sufficient for three days per person)

  • Avoid foods that will make you thirsty
  • Ready to eat meals, fruits and vegetables
  • Non-perishable packaged or canned food/juices/soup
  • Staples (sugar, salt, pepper, powered milk)
  • High energy foods (peanut butter, jelly, salt free crackers, granola bars)
  • Foods for infants, elderly persons or persons with special dietary needs
  • Snack foods (cookies, hard candy, sweetened cereals, lollipops, instant coffee, tea bags)

Sanitation and Hygiene Supplies

  • Feminine supplies
  • Insect repellent
  • Liquid detergent
  • Moisture wipes
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Shampoo, comb, brush
  • Soap
  • Toilet paper

Special Needs for Babies/Infants

  • Bottles
  • Diapers
  • Formula
  • Medications
  • Pacifiers
  • Powered milk

Prescription and Non-Prescription Medication

Don't forget to refill all prescription medications before a storm approaches.

  • Prescription medications in their prescription bottles (sufficient for 10 to 14 days)
  • Antacid (for upset stomach)
  • Anti-diarrhea medication
  • Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
  • Denture needs
  • Extra eye glasses/contact lenses and solutions
  • Hearing aid batteries
  • Heart and high blood pressure medications
  • Insulin
  • Laxative Vitamins
  • List of allergies and medications
  • Oxygen

Important Documents (keep in a waterproof container)

  • Bank account numbers
  • Credit card account numbers and companies
  • Family records (birth, marriage, death certificates)
  • Document all valuables with videotape if possible
  • House keys
  • Important telephone numbers
  • Map of the city
  • Photo ID passports, social security cards, immunization records, etc
  • Photograph interior and exterior of home, inventory of all furnishings
  • Will, insurance policies, contracts, deeds, stocks and bonds, marriage certificate
