City of PSL Public Works achieves 25 years of APWA accreditation
Published on June 25, 2026
The City of Port St. Lucie Public Works Department recently reached a milestone few agencies achieve.
With its 2026 reaccreditation review, the Public Works Department marked 25 years of continuous accreditation by the American Public Works Association (APWA) that was capped by a perfect 100% compliance score.
As the first public works agency in Florida to earn APWA accreditation, Port St. Lucie has spent a quarter century demonstrating its commitment to a culture of continuous improvement and serving one of the nation’s fastest‑growing cities.
The Public Works Department maintains one of Florida’s largest municipal infrastructure networks, with:
- More than 900 miles of roads
- More than 250 miles of sidewalks
- Approximately 200 miles of canals
- A vast stormwater system
A data-driven approach to asset management ensures these systems keep pace with rapid population growth and community needs.
During the most recent review, APWA evaluators highlighted the City’s neighborhood traffic-calming policy for its transparent process and effective balance of engineering analysis and resident engagement.
Accreditation also supports the department’s critical role in storm preparation and recovery. Each hurricane season, using procedures and protocols strengthened through the accreditation network, Public Works teams conduct system-wide inspections, clear drainage networks, prepare equipment and respond immediately after storms to assess damage and restore access.
As Port St. Lucie’s population continues to grow and challenges like aging infrastructure and climate resilience need to be addressed, the Public Works Department remains committed to developing innovative, data-driven solutions that will shape the City’s future.
