Like many communities across Florida, the City of Port St. Lucie experienced significant rainfall over the weekend and into today.
We urge residents to use caution and stay off roads unless absolutely necessary. Please do not attempt to drive through standing water. Turn around, find an alternate route and never underestimate the depth or power of floodwater.
The City’s Public Works Department has been working tirelessly to prepare for and manage these conditions. That includes inspecting and clearing drainage systems, grates and inlets to keep water flowing as well as possible.
It also included fixing potholes created by standing water on roads and continued rain. Public Works and the Police Department also have been coordinating to monitor affected areas and respond to residents who need assistance as quickly and efficiently as possible.
However, the amount of rain over a sustained period of time has led to standing water in areas across the City.
Swales, retention ponds, canals and other drainage features are designed to collect and temporarily hold stormwater. During very heavy and sustained rainfall, portions of streets can also provide temporary storage. This is a common stormwater-management approach across Florida, with the goal of directing water away from homes and buildings.
As of Monday, Nov. 2 at 6:45 p.m., the following major roadways are closed, with many smaller streets around the City also closed:
The following roadways are being monitored for potential road closings:
City Hall will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 3. City facilities will be open where voting will take place.
The St. Lucie County Landfill closed early on Monday due to inclement weather. FCC Environmental Services continued collection operations and serviced residences until collection vehicles reached capacity.
Some residents may encounter potential service delays if FCC was not able to collect prior to reaching capacity. If your waste is not collected on your scheduled service day, if you are able to, please leave your materials curbside for collection.
If weather conditions continue to impact collection operations and landfill access, service recovery efforts may extend into Saturday.
The Planning and Zoning meeting scheduled for Nov. 2 is canceled. Items will be rolled over to the December meeting.
All City of Port St. Lucie parks, recreation programs and fitness centers will be closed on Tuesday, including the kids camp scheduled at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center. We will monitor conditions to determine when they will reopen.
