Dispose of household hazardous waste safely at City of Port St. Lucie’

What: Fall is a great time to clean out the garage, shed or cabinets, but not everything belongs in the trash. Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day offers residents a safe, convenient way to dispose of unwanted household chemicals, electronics and other hazardous materials. During the City’s spring collection, residents safely disposed of 32,778 pounds of household hazardous waste. The free collection is open to City of Port St. Lucie and St. Lucie County residents. A valid ID is required to participate.

When: Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to noon

Where: Public Works Facility, 450 SW Thornhill Drive

Why: Items such as bug sprays, electronics, drain cleaners, fire extinguishers, fluorescent light bulbs and tubes, fuel and fats, oils and grease from cooking and food preparation can require special handling and should not simply be placed in the trash. The Port St. Lucie Police Department also will be on site collecting ammunition and non-liquid prescription medications. The City's collection provides residents with a safe way to dispose of these materials at no cost.

Fats, oils and grease must be in containers less than 5 gallons. The collection is for residential waste only and does not accept commercial, institutional or agricultural materials.

The process is designed to be convenient. Residents should remain in their vehicles and follow the designated drive-up process. City staff will unload the materials at no cost.
