Preserving green space and the community’s natural beauty are priorities for City of Port St. Lucie residents. Next week, the City invites the public to learn first-hand about a major milestone in its preservation efforts.
The City will host a press conference to announce the formal acquisition of nearly 105 acres that were once slated to become homes. Located between I‑95 and Rosser Boulevard, the property will be preserved for generations to come.
City leaders will join residents to dedicate trees planted in honor of the inaugural Naturally PSL Environmental Stewardship Awards Program recipients who were named last year.
- Date: Friday, Feb. 20
- Time: 11 a.m.
- Location: Corner of SW Rosser Boulevard and SW Bermel Avenue
Earlier that morning, the City Council will formally vote on creating a non-profit organization, called the Naturally PSL Community Trust, for the purpose of acquiring, conserving and activating green space for public benefits through strategic fundraising partnerships and leveraging public and private funding. If approved, city officials at the press conference, will explain how the Naturally PSL Land Bank and Community Trust will work in tandem to:
- Increase residents' access to parks, trails, preserves and other green spaces through land acquisitions;
- Enhance resiliency through stormwater management, education and green infrastructure;
- Improve the quality of environmentally sensitive lands, wildlife habitats and connectivity;
- Improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
“We are committed to protecting what makes Port St. Lucie special – our natural spaces,” said Mayor Shannon M. Martin. “Rosser Lakes nature preserve will be a place where families can connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors. It’s an investment in our future and a demonstration of all that we can accomplish when we work together with our residents.”
The acquisition of the Rosser Lakes property was the first for the Naturally PSL Land Bank. As part of the Naturally PSL: Green Spaces and Places initiative, there are 198 acres that have been identified as City-owned natural preserves and nearly 745 acres have been designated for future green space. There also are 41 miles of trails currently available, with 20.3 miles being planned. Two new parks opened in 2024, with six others scheduled to open or undergo improvements.
