St. Lucie County’s Emergency Management staff is relocating its general population and special medical needs shelter to alternative facilities Wednesday morning in an effort to help St. Lucie Public Schools reopen.
The general population shelter at Northport K-8 School is being relocated to the Havert L. Fenn Center, located at 2000 Virginia Ave. in Fort Pierce.
The special medical needs shelter, located at the Fenn Center, is moving to the Florida Department of Health – St. Lucie Office, 5150 NW Milner Drive in Port St Lucie.
As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, there were 16 people in the general population shelter and five in the special medical needs shelter.
St. Lucie County activated temporary shelters, in partnership with St. Lucie Public Schools and the St. Lucie County’s Sheriff’s Office, to assist residents displaced by the historic flooding event that occurred this week.
Because of the historic amount of rainfall, public safety officials warn that it may take a few days before the water levels recede. Public works and water management agencies have opened water control structures; however, with the recent rains and King Tides, the water has nowhere to flow.
