City of Port St. Lucie staff connected with hundreds of St. Lucie County students to help them learn how local government impacts their daily lives while encouraging civic engagement.

Florida City Government Week took place Oct. 19-25 and Port St. Lucie staff from more than 10 City departments participated in school presentations and interactive discussions about how local government provides the services residents rely on every day.

Sponsored by the Florida League of Cities, Florida City Government Week highlights the important role municipalities play in building strong, connected communities. As the level of government closest to residents, cities provide essential services that affect everything from public safety and parks to roads and utilities.

“Students particularly enjoyed asking questions and learning about the boundaries and capabilities of their city’s government, “said Mr. Michael Kyryliw, Social Studies Department Head at Somerset College Preparatory Academy. “The presentation also gave some students a chance to express interest in possibly being a part of the Youth Council or how to pursue a future career in city government.”

Students from six different schools, including middle and high schools located in Port St. Lucie, had a chance to learn about operating local government.

  • Somerset College Preparatory Academy
  • Allapattah Flats K-8
  • St. Lucie West Centennial High School
  • Legacy High School
  • Renaissance Charter School
  • Southern Oaks Middle School

This year, students had an opportunity to not only learn about the City's services, but they also were able to give direct feedback about Port St. Lucie's strategic goals. This information will be provided to the City Council when it reviews the Strategic Plan next year.
