City of PSL Hurricane Milton Advisory #4

Published on October 09, 2024

Hurricane Milton Weather Watch

The City of Port St. Lucie continues to monitor Hurricane Milton’s path and is preparing for any storm-related impacts it could bring to the area.

St. Lucie County was under a hurricane warning as of the 11 a.m. National Hurricane Center advisory. Tropical storm force winds could begin arriving as early as Wednesday afternoon under the current forecast.

All City facilities are closed Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10.

The City has completed shuttering its facilities and are finalizing storm preparations. The City highly encourages residents to complete their preparations now, making sure their homes are secured and they are following their storm plans. If you are concerned about the integrity of your home, do what you can to secure it and then take refuge with friends, relatives or at a shelter. Please continue to closely monitor the National Hurricane Center for details about the storm www.nhc.noaa.gov.

Below are updates for Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 11 a.m. The next advisory is expected to be released Wednesday at approximately 5 p.m.

New Information

Office of Solid Waste: All garbage, recycling, yard waste and bulk waste pickup are being collected today, Wednesday, Oct. 9. The St. Lucie County landfill will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 10 and the City of Port St. Lucie’s contracted trash hauler, FCC Environmental Services, will suspend services Oct. 10 to ensure the safety of FCC drivers and residents.

If storm conditions have passed, the following adjustments to the pickup schedule will be in place:

  • Thursday’s customers will be collected on Friday, Oct. 11.
  • Friday’s customers will be collected on Saturday, Oct. 12.

Residents are asked not to put out trash, recycling, yard waste or bulk waste on Thursday.

Because the Convenient Drop-Off Center on Cameo Boulevard may be necessary for debris cleanup after the storm, it will be closed Wednesday and Thursday to ensure it has capacity.

Due to the storm’s current predicted path, residents are asked to:

  • Not trim vegetation of any kind
  • Not begin construction projects
  • Monitor the City’s website for updates or delays in service
  • Avoid placing piles of debris curbside, as collection service can be suspended at any time
  • Avoid projects that will produce bulk waste piles

Public Works: Our public works department has been working tirelessly to reduce the potential for flooding by clearing storm drains, inspecting culverts and addressing any infrastructure vulnerabilities. All canal and lake water levels are at or below historical season settings as of 9 a.m. today.

Roadways: Public works and police departments will be monitoring roadways for flooding to ensure public safety. The City encourages residents to stay off the roads unless necessary for their safety and that of others.

The City evaluated and addressed potholes on major roadways throughout the City prior to Hurricane Milton in an effort to reduce traffic hazard risks.

We will continue to address potholes as weather permits before the storm. During the storm, report potholes or other roadway hazards such as traffic signals that are out by calling 911.

Once the storm passes, potholes can be reported by calling our 1PSL customer service system at 772-871-1775 or through the 1PSL app. If residents see other significant traffic hazards such as traffic signals that are not working after the storm, they should continue to be reported by calling 911.

Code Compliance: Our Code Compliance officers are working across the City today to ensure residents and businesses have brought outdoor items inside or secured them. That includes lawn furniture, fixtures and any openly stored materials, including temporary signage, on their properties.

Building Department: The Building Department is actively contacting and advising contractors to secure their construction sites in advance of the storm.

Utility Systems: If residents experience a water or sewer issue, please call 772-873-6400. Connection Support representatives are available 24/7.

Please be aware that field staff will continue to respond to calls for service until the impacts of the storm make it unsafe to do so. Once conditions improve, and it is safe for field staff to respond to calls, they will be dispatched.

We would also like to remind residents to conserve water during a power outage to avoid potential sewer backups. For more information on preparing for the storm, go to Utility Systems: Storm Preparation & Recovery.

Parks and Recreation Department: As a reminder, all City parks and recreation facilities are closed today and tomorrow. That does not include the C24 Canal Park and Veteran’s Memorial Park at Rivergate, which will remain open for watercraft removal only.

St. Lucie County Transit: Palm Tran suspended services for the Port St. Lucie Express on Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, Oct. 10. St. Lucie County’s public transit, Area Regional Transit (ART), will suspend fixed route and on-demand service at noon today and remain closed through Thursday.

Both transit programs plan to reopen Friday morning, weather permitting. For additional information, visit www.slcart.org or call 772-462-1778.
