Port St. Lucie County (June 10, 2024): The Humane Society of St Lucie County is proudly joining forces with Petco Love - formerly known as the Petco Foundation, a national non-profit working to lead and inspire change for animals – and animal welfare groups across the state of Florida on a shared mission to find homes for 2,000 dogs and cats in shelters.  The Petco Love Florida Mega Adoption Event will take place on June 28th, 29th and 30th in Petco stores and local animal shelters.

According to the most recent nationwide data, Florida ranks 46th in the nation when it comes to saving the lives of pets in shelters. In 2021, In nearly 22,616 dogs and cats were killed in animal shelters across Florida. With help from Petco Love, local animal shelters are aiming to close that gap by finding homes for 2,000 pets in three days.

The flagship Petco Love Florida Mega Adoption Event was held in June of 2023 and found homes for 1,946 animals. This year, with 46 shelters participating across 33 counties, the event aims to pass the 2,000 pets goal in just three days. Thousands of pets will be available for adoption. All pets will be spayed or neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations. All adoption fees will be waived, some exclusions may apply.

Locally, pets will be available at the following locations:

• Humane Society of St. Lucie County June 28th, 29th, & 30th 11am to 5pm

• Havert L. Fenn Center June 28th & 29th 10am to 4pm

The event is funded by a grant from Petco Love to the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) and facilitated by JHS’s Florida Leaders in Lifesaving program.

"Floridians love animals, and adopting from your local shelter is the best way to add a family member. Summers are tough for shelters nationwide, and this is a chance to change the lives of many dogs and cats," said Denise Deisler, JHS CEO. "Petco Love has greatly supported Florida's lifesaving efforts for years, and we deeply appreciate their dedication to animal welfare. We look forward to Floridians coming together to support our shelters!"

"Petco Love is dedicated to ensuring every shelter pet finds a loving home and preventing unnecessary euthanasia," said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. "We are proud to collaborate with the Jacksonville Humane Society and 50 organizations across the state to positively impact the lives of countless pets and their new families through adoption."

“Summer is a notorious time of year for shelters to be overcrowded, and we are feeling the strain,” said Shannon Glendinning, Development Director for the Humane Society of St Lucie County. “By hosting a regional event here in St. Lucie County and partnering with four other animal shelters, we aim to create a unique MEGA Adoption experience that will provide many pets with their second chances. Last year, we celebrated over 75 adoptions in just three days. This year, let's set a new record. Adopt pure love and help us make a difference.”
