Free Chlorine Sensitivity

The Port St. Lucie Utility Systems Department will temporarily modify its water disinfection process between July 8-22. The City performs this process annually to ensure water quality and maintain compliance with Federal and State regulatory agency requirements.

This is referred to as “free chlorine conversion” and occurs when a water system that typically uses chloramine (such as the City of Port St. Lucie) removes ammonia from the treatment process and disinfects the water only with chlorine.

Periodic modifications to the water disinfection process are standard practice that are recommended by the American Water Works Association as a precautionary measure to maintain the highest water quality possible. Customers may notice a slight chlorine taste or a change in color and odor during this time.

Free Chlorine Hydrant Flushing

To speed up the process and quickly move fresh water through the City’s more than 1,400-mile long water system, fire hydrants will be flushed during this two-week period. While flushing the hydrants, tap water may become temporarily cloudy and discolored, which should only last a few hours.

Any changes in the water color or odor will be temporary and will not cause any adverse health effects. Individuals may still drink the water. However, individuals who are on kidney dialysis should consult their physician for special instructions. Individuals who have tropical fish or aquatic animals should consult a tropical fish store to ensure appropriate action is taken before adding water to the aquarium.

For those who are sensitive to the taste of chlorine, keeping an open container of drinking water in the refrigerator for a few hours will allow the chlorine taste to dissipate. Customers may contact the Utility Systems Department with questions, comments or concerns:
