City of PSL honoring Old Glory with Flag Retirement Box Program
Published on July 02, 2025
Residents who want to respectfully retire their worn out and tattered U.S. flags will soon have a convenient way to do so in Port St. Lucie.
The City of Port St. Lucie launched a Flag Retirement Box Program to give residents an opportunity to easily and properly discard flags. Flag retirement boxes have been installed at City Hall, Veterans Memorial Park and MIDFLORIDA Event Center. They are the first of their kind to be provided by the City.
The flag retirement boxes were generously donated by the Gulf Iraq Afghanistan Veterans Association, founded by City Councilman David Pickett.
The City will ensure the collected flags will be presented to local organizations for proper disposal.
One of these boxes will be available on Friday, July 4 at the City of Port St. Lucie’s Freedomfest event from 5-9 p.m. at the MIDFLORIDA Event Center, 9221 SE Event Center Place. Residents can bring worn-out flags to the retirement box at the City’s Stay Informed table. After the festival, this box will remain inside the Event Center’s lobby.
The United States Flag Code indicates that the U.S. flag, “when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way.” This initiative highlights the City's commitment to honoring our nation's flag and providing the community with a proper disposal method.
