Humane Society Launches First-Ever Summer Camp
Published on May 15, 2025
The Humane Society of St. Lucie County (HSSLC) is excited to announce its very first summer camp: Pet Ed Summer Camp. This Summer Camp offers kids entering grades 3-8 a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn about animal care, compassion, and advocacy through a variety of fun Pet-Edventures! Thanks to a generous sponsorship from GL Homes, this week-long camp, which includes lunch and snacks, is available for an incredibly affordable $50 per week.
Running throughout the summer, Pet Ed Summer Camp turns kids into Pet-Edventurers. It blends fun and learning through immersive activities that empower kids to become animal advocates. Campers will tour the shelter, meet adoptable animals, create pet toys, and even watch dogs run through the shelter’s brand-new Woof and Wag Agility Course. From reading to kittens to helping stock the Pawsitive Pet Pantry, kids will make a direct impact on the lives of homeless cats and dogs.
“Pet-Ed Summer Camp is about shaping future leaders who understand that compassion is a form of strength. We’re teaching children that how we treat the most vulnerable, especially animals, defines our humanity. By educating young people in our community on the loving and humane treatment of animals, HSSLC is helping build a future where cruelty and animal homelessness are not tolerated”, said Nukhet Hendricks, Executive Director of HSSLC.
What Campers Will Experience:
- Learn about adoption, spay/neuter, and the inner workings of an animal shelter
- Design adoption posters that help pets find their forever homes
- Spend quality time with dogs and cats
- Gain essential safety skills like reading animal body language
- Craft toys for cats and dogs
- Watch live dog agility demonstrations
- Participate in community outreach projects like stocking the Pawsitive Pet Pantry
Pet Ed Summer Camp is perfect for kids who love animals, enjoy crafts and hands-on activities, and might be curious about a future working with pets.
GL Homes' generous sponsorship made this affordable camp possible, ensuring accessibility for local families. “We’re so grateful to GL Homes for helping us bring this dream to life. Their support means parents, kids, and pets all win this summer,” said Shannon Glendinning Director of Development of HSSLC.
