This October, families in St. Lucie County will have the chance to change the lives of homeless pets in their own community. From October 1–15, the Humane Society of St. Lucie County (HSSLC) will waive adoption fees for all cats and dogs as part of the nationwide Empty the Shelters initiative, generously sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Adoptions will take place at the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, located at 8890 Glades Cut Off Road, Port St. Lucie, FL 34986. All adopted pets come spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped—making this the perfect time for families to welcome a new furry friend.

“Shelters continue to struggle in 2025, with more pets entering than leaving. But together, we have the power to change the story,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “Our National Empty the Shelters events bring attention to the pets of every breed, size and type waiting in shelters across the country. Each adoption gives a pet a second chance, eases the burden on shelters, and inspires more people to get involved. When you adopt, you become part of a lifesaving movement.”

For the Humane Society of St. Lucie County, this event is about more than numbers—it’s about neighbors stepping up to help local animals in need. During the last Empty the Shelters event, 32 dogs and 78 cats from our shelter found loving homes right here in our community. This October, we’re determined to surpass that success and see even more tails wagging.

“We are honored to once again partner with BISSELL Pet Foundation for Empty the Shelters, especially during a time when so many animals are in need of homes,” said Nukhet Hendricks, Executive Director at the Humane Society of St. Lucie County.

Families considering adoption are encouraged to visit hsslc.org/pet-adoption/ to view available pets and learn more about the adoption process. Every adoption helps open kennel space, making it possible for HSSLC to save even more animals in need of temporary shelter, medical care, and love.
