Teens invited to shape community through City of PSL Youth Council
Published on May 12, 2025
Teenagers who want to be a voice for their peers and make a difference in their community are encouraged to apply for the City of Port St. Lucie Youth Council.
Students who will be in grades 9-12 for the 2025-26 school year and are residents of Port St. Lucie are eligible to apply for the Youth Council.
The application period will begin May 12 and close June 13. Interested students can visit CityofPSL.com/YouthCouncil to fill out the online application form.
The Youth Council was established in 2023 as a way for young people in the community to share their voices and be part of the decision-making process. It also provides students with an opportunity to:
- Learn about local government
- Earn community service hours
- Build leadership skills
- Build public speaking and training opportunities
- Provide their input and feedback to City leaders
The 2024-25 Youth Council had more than 45 members, a significant jump from the nine students who participated in the inaugural council.
This year, the Youth Council launched two committees—the High-Performance Public Spaces Committee and the Youth Recreation/Teen Programming Committee—focused on providing feedback on key programs and events, including the Naturally PSL Program, Parks & Recreation initiatives, and Special Events Department activities. Additionally, members contributed their perspectives on Juneteenth celebrations, the 2025 Fall Fun Fest, and a Police Department Youth initiative.
Youth Council members participated in the Florida League of Cities Youth Summit held in Tallahassee and attended the National League of Cities Youth Conference in Tampa.
Youth Council members also volunteered at numerous City activities, conducting surveys for teens and residents about current and future City projects at the International Festival, PSLinLights, Citizen Summit, FAM Fest and various Love Your Block events.
Additionally, the Youth Council advocated for an end-of-year event for high school students. For the second consecutive year, the “Big Summer Blowout” will be held to celebrate the last day of the school year. The event, which takes place Monday, June 2 from 12-4:30 p.m., is hosted by the City of Port St. Lucie Parks and Recreation Department at Minsky Gym.
