How to Prepare & Package Your Flag

  1. Inspect: Confirm it’s an official U.S. flag and no longer fit for flying.
  2. Fold: Perform the traditional triangular fold (see downloadable guide(PDF, 177KB)).
  3. Protect: Place the folded flag into a clean, breathable cotton bag or envelope.
  4. Label: Clearly mark the package “FLAG RETIREMENT ONLY.”
  5. Drop Off: Insert it into any designated slot—no appointment needed.
