When a home goes into foreclosure, it often becomes empty long before the legal process is finished. These properties can sit vacant for long periods of time, which could lead to them becoming run‑down or neglected. If the property isn’t maintained, it could create problems in the neighborhood, especially when code violations occur.

The purpose of the abandoned property registration is to help prevent these homes from deteriorating. When a property has been abandoned because of foreclosure—or ownership has been turned over to a bank or lender—the registration process ensures the City has up‑to‑date contact information for whoever is responsible for the property. This makes it easier for Code Compliance to reach the correct person if the property needs maintenance or if a code violation is found.

Before You Register

  • Applicants must perform an initial inspection of the property to verify the property is vacant and/or shows signs of vacancy.
  • Applicants must provide proof that a lis pendens, default and/or any action to foreclose upon a mortgage or similar instrument has been filed on the property being registered.
  • All applications and registration fees must be filed online. The Neighborhood Services Department will not except cash, checks or applications that are physically mailed to its office.
