The Westport Wastewater Treatment Facility Upgrade is a transformative $65 million initiative aimed at improving wastewater treatment efficiency through enhanced nutrient reduction. Funded in part by a federal grant program, the project is currently 54% complete and progressing toward significant environmental benefits. The project remains on schedule for completion in Summer 2027.

Advanced Treatment & Environmental Protection

Westport has the capacity to treat 6 million gallons per day, ensuring compliance with the latest Florida Department of Environmental Protection standards and Florida State Statutes. The facility is implementing the Best Management Action Plan and Advanced Wastewater Treatment technology to meet stringent environmental guidelines.

By refining wastewater treatment methods, reclaimed water used for irrigation will undergo improved filtration to prevent nitrogen and phosphorus from entering the St. Lucie River Estuary. These upgrades will enhance water quality and reduce environmental impact. It will also support sustainable disposal practices, whether through deep injection wells or the use of irrigation-quality reclaimed water.

Infrastructure Enhancements & Construction Progress

Since January 2024, construction has focused on modernizing the facility through:

  • Expanded aeration basin facilities for improved biological treatment
  • Upgraded pretreatment systems to enhance processing efficiency
  • New high-efficiency turbo-blowers to optimize energy use
  • Advanced electrical and filtration systems for greater reliability
  • Infrastructure hardening to better withstand extreme weather conditions

Community Considerations & Sustainability Efforts

Located near Sawgrass Lakes, the facility's construction is carefully planned to minimize disruptions and maintain neighborhood harmony. Measures are being taken to reduce noise levels, helping it better blend into the environment.

These upgrades will make water treatment more efficient and produce cleaner water, helping protect the environment and keep local water resources safe and available.
